Deadly New Trend Developing in African Migration to Europe

The International Organization for Migration reports a sharp increase in the number of sub-Saharan Africans making the dangerous sea journey from Libya to Italy. But the organization says a deadly new trend is developing on board the boats that smuggle these migrants.
The International Organization for Migration calls death by asphyxiation on board smugglers’ boats sailing from Libya to Italy a horrific new trend. The latest incidence came to light in the last few days when more than 1,000 migrants were rescued at sea and brought to two different Italian seaports.
IOM spokesmen, Itayi Viriri says among those brought ashore by rescuers were five bodies — three women and two men from Sub-Saharan Africa. They apparently had died from asphyxiation during the journey.

“The vessels that they are being put on are quite overcrowded. So, whereas normally you hear of migrants drowning in large numbers, now we are seeing more and more being squashed in these vessels that they are being put into,” he said.

Nothing stopping smuggling gang in Libya
Viriri says these migrants are extremely vulnerable because there is no real authority in Libya to stop the smuggling gangs from putting people on overcrowded boats.
IOM estimates nearly 9,000 migrants have arrived by sea in Italy since the beginning of the year. It says most making this dangerous crossing originate from Sub-Saharan Africa, in particular Nigeria, Gambia, and Mali.
Viriri tells VOA African migrants pay the smugglers between $600 and $800, which is about half the amount paid by Syrians and other migrants from the Middle East, Bangladesh or elsewhere. He says Africans suffer discrimination as a consequence of this unequal pay scale.
“In those cases, where you have other nationalities, other than Sub-Saharan nationals—yes, based on how much they pay, they are put in the hold and those who pay more are put up on, maybe what could be safer, upper decks,” he said.

IOM says the exodus of refugees and migrants into Europe continues unabated. According to the latest figures, more than 120,000 have arrived in Greece and Italy so far this year. This far exceeds last year’s figure of 100,000 arrivals by June.

UK EU exit would be global economy 'shock' - G20 leaders

UK EU exit would be global economy 'shock' - G20 leaders

Media captionGeorge Osborne: "This is deadly serious. It's about people's jobs and their livelihoods"
Finance ministers from the world's leading economies have warned of a "shock" to the global economy if the UK leaves the EU.
The ministers gave their opinion in a statement released at the end of a two-day meeting of G20 nations in China.
Chancellor George Osborne, who is at the event, told the BBC the referendum issue was "deadly serious".
But former Chancellor Lord Lawson said the G20's warning was "absurd" because 15 of its members were outside the EU.
Asked if he or his officials had asked for the warning to be included in the statement, Mr Osborne said: "We've got countries around the table like the United States of America, like the IMF, like the Chinese who frankly don't do what anyone tells them to do."
However, Lord Lawson told the BBC: "The British people will not take kindly to being told by the G20 what they should do. And the notion that the UK leaving the EU would cause an economic shock is absurd.
"Fifteen of the members of the G20 are outside the EU, and that hasn't caused an economic shock. Indeed, most of them are doing better than most of the members of the European Union."
UKIP leader Nigel Farage said the G20 announcement was "no surprise" as it was "mates helping each other out".
"I'm not surprised that big government gets together to support David Cameron," he added.
"This is big banks, big business, big government all scratching each other's backs. I don't think that impresses voters."

Officials travelling with Mr Osborne say the mention of the UK's referendum in the G20 meeting's final communique is unusual. Mr Osborne has denied he pushed for it.
The chancellor told the BBC: "The financial leaders of the world's biggest countries have given their unanimous verdict and they say that a British exit from the EU would be a shock to the world economy.
"And if it's a shock to the world economy imagine what it would do to Britain."
He added: "This isn't some adventurous journey into the unknown, with all the humour attached to it, this is deadly serious."

With the gleaming early spring sunshine behind him, as he stood on the bank of Shanghai's Huangpu river, the chancellor said he was "deadly serious".
He's not the only one. It seems the other 19 leaders at the G20 agree about the "shock", as they've called it, if the UK walked out of the EU.
It's not a big surprise. The president of hosts China made it clear last year during his Chequers stay that he wants Britain In.
But then again China doesn't really do intervention in domestic politics.
George Osborne will be pleased to have this significant and very public diplomatic backing as he sits on the plane back home tonight.
There's a whiff of the Scottish referendum campaign about it though, when various foreign leaders lined up behind the government position.

A senior official from the Treasury told the BBC the chancellor's US counterpart had raised the issue during the meeting, as did others, including senior Chinese officials and Ms Lagarde.
US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew later urged UK voters to "consider the impact" of voting to leave, and said the White House believed it was in the UK's "national security interests" to remain in the union.
Elsewhere, Prime Minister David Cameron was in Northern Ireland as part of his UK tour to persuade voters that membership of a reformed EU is in their best interests.
CBI director general Carolyn Fairbairn described the potential consequences of the UK leaving the EU as an "evident risk".

'Out is out'

"Those who wish to leave must put forward a clear economic case, explaining how being outside the EU will enhance jobs, growth and prosperity in the UK and across Europe.
"The majority - but not all - of CBI members want the UK to remain in a reformed EU," she added.
Meanwhile, London Mayor Boris Johnson has clarified his position over the idea that a vote to leave the EU could force Brussels to give Britain a better deal over its membership and trigger a second referendum.
Mr Johnson had previously suggested that only by voting to leave would the UK "get the change we need".
But in The Times, Mr Johnson stated categorically: "Out is out".
The UK will vote on whether to leave or remain in the EU on 23 June.
Mr Cameron set the date last weekend after agreeing a deal with fellow EU leaders about a renegotiation of the UK's EU membership.

French court upholds order to partially demolish refugee slum 'Calais jungle'

French court upholds order to partially demolish refugee slum 'Calais jungle'

A judge in France has upheld the government's order to destroy parts of the refugee shanty town in Calais. The official deadline for migrants to leave the area was Tuesday.
"The order is applicable, except for common social areas," the Pas-de-Calais prefect's office said in a statement. Schools and prayer centers are among the common spaces not to be destroyed.
Humanitarian groups appealed to a court in Lille to overrule the government's order but the judge rejected their petition, according to French radio Bleue Nord.
Calais Mayor Natacha Bouchart told local channel BFM TV that she was relieved by the decision. "We will be vigilant about what is going to happen in the coming hours and extremely vigilant about what happens in the coming days," she said.
At least 1,000 migrants living in the so-called "jungle" camp in France's northern port city were staying in the area after the official deadline for them to leave expired on Tuesday. Authorities said they would use force if necessary and move them to an alternative accommodation at a container park nearby and to other reception centers.
The Calais "jungle" has become a tension point after migrants parked in the area and tried to get into Britain illegally through the Eurotunnel or "Chunnel." British and French governments have taken several measures to avoid migrants from crossing over into the UK. However, critics have said closing the camp may not solve the problem.

US proposes new sanctions against North Korea to UN Security Council

US proposes new sanctions against North Korea to UN Security Council

The United States has submitted a draft resolution geared at punishing the North Korean regime for its nuclear tests. Recent actions from Pyongyang have triggered the response officials say China also supports.
UN Security Council
US Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power started a push for new sanctions Thursday against Pyongyang in response to the country's controversial nuclear weapons program.
"It is a major upgrade and there will be, provided it goes forward, pressure on more points, tougher, more comprehensive, more sectors," Power said. "It's breaking new ground in a whole host of ways."
Power made her comments ahead of a closed-door meeting of the United Nations Security Council. She also said the sanctions called for in the draft resolution represented the "strongest set of sanctions imposed by the Security Council in more than two decades."
Sanctions ' target elite'
Under the proposed sanctions, the sale of small arms and other conventional weapons to North Korea would be banned - closing a loophole in previous resolutions. Exports of coal, iron, gold, titanium and other rare minerals to North Korea would also be limited and in some cases banned, Power said, stressing that the sanctions targeted North Korea's ruling elite as opposed to the country's people.
The resolution would also includes financial sanctions aimed at North Korean banks and assets and bans all dual use nuclear missile related items.
Included on an extensive list of luxury items which North Korea would no longer be allowed to import are products such as luxury watches, snowmobiles, recreational water vehicles and lead crystal.
US secures Chinese backing
Diplomats announced that China had agreed to the draft earlier on Thursday, after weeks of tense negotiations. The two countries had disagreed on how strongly to punish North Korea for its violations of past Security Council resolutions.
After Washington and Beijing agreed on the draft resolution, French Ambassador Francois Delattre said "the conditions are now met" for a "strong and consensual" response from the Security Council.
A vote on the proposed resolution is expected this weekend.
The Council first imposed sanctions on Pyongyang back in 2006, and the US has argued for further sanctions since the country has so far not been deterred from going forward with its nuclear ambitions.
North Korea shocked the world when it launched what it claimed was a satellite-bearing rocket in early February, not long after it had tested a hydrogen bomb.
