Prince Philip admitted to hospital for operation following abdominal pains
PRINCE Philip was taken to hospital today for exploratory surgery on his abdomen for what is expected to be a two week stay.
In a surprise announcement Buckingham Palace this morning said the Duke was admitted to the private London Clinic “for exploratory operation following abdominal investigations”.
"His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has been admitted to the London Clinic for an exploratory operation following abdominal investigations. He is expected to stay in hospital for up to two weeks," a statement said.
The private hospital is a longtime favourite for celebrities and royals in need of treatment.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Twitter: "My best wishes to the Duke of Edinburgh who is in hospital tonight. I hope he has a swift recovery."
The announcement came three hours after he attended a mass annual garden party at Buckingham palace for sports stars, aristocrats and commoners and was seen smiling and making jokes with guests.
Prince Philip, who turns 92 next Monday, had also cancelled two appointments in recent days including a gala charity reception with the Queen the night before her coronation commemoration at Westminster Abbey on Tuesday.
Despite the hospital admission for an operation tomorrow under general anesthetic and lengthy planned stay, a palace spokeswoman said the Duke was okay.
“He is in very good health,” she said.
“He felt unwell on Monday and missed an engagement but that was down to the fact he had temporarily lost his voice.

The operation at the exclusive Harley Street medical centre in central London is expected to be laparoscopic or keyhole exploratory surgery. Just what his stomach complaint is not known. Police were last night standing guard outside the centre.
The Duke has had several health scares in recent times.
Last June during the Diamond jubilee celebrations he spent five nights in hospital for a bladder infection and two months spent another five nights in hospital with a similar complaint.

On Christmas the previous year he was taken to hospital with a blocked coronary artery.
Buckingham palace said it would issue more updates as they came to hand.
Earlier today, the Queen's grandson Peter Phillips said people should not be so surprised if the 87-year-old Queen and Duke miss some engagements due to advancing age.
He said his grandparents still maintained heavy schedules, more than most people their age, and that from time to time they may have to pull out off. He was referring to Prince Philip pulling out of the engagement earlier this week. Google news
