Stefan Füle, European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood, visited Cyprus to discuss the current situation in Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities. On 19 June, he gave a speech in the Cyprus capital Nicosia and touched the most important affaires.
Füle wanted to concentrate on two main issues, the worrying situation in the settlement process and the upcoming Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union. He thinks the fact that no settlement has been reached so far is disturbing. The current situation is not acceptable for anyone. There is no satisfying alternative to the reunification of Cyprus.
„Unfinished business on Cyprus is becoming unfinished business in the EU. You can feel it more and more in the EU. There are many issues where we are reminded on a regular basis that there is still homework to be done even 8 years after Cyprus entered in the EU,“ the Commissioner said.
According to Füle, both communities need to move forward with discussing how to improve working together in general. He suggest that they could concentrate on new crossing points, economic interactions, cultural heritage or environmental protection. As for the upcoming Cypriot EU Presidency, he does not think it could threaten the settlement process.
„I believe that the Presidency can benefit all Cypriots and increase the chances for a successful solution to the Cyprus problem.“                                                   DW DE
