Samaras: 'We have to be tough with people who do not see reality'
New Democracy President Antonis Samaras
Greece's centre-right New Democracy (ND) party President, Antonis Samaras, talks exclusively to New Europe about the political situation in the country and prospects for overcoming the crisis.
Samaras was surprisingly down-to-earth and, at the same time, very confident and firm. Following the formation of the Papademos government – with participation of PASOK (Socialists), ND, and LAOS (populist, right wing) - concerns were quickly raised over the viability of a national unity government with a limited scope and mandate, namely the implementation of the October 27 Eurozone decision for Greece.
Yet Samaras stressed that at this moment for Greece “one should look beyond ideological differences” and search for necessary political cohesion needed to quickly conclude the agreement with the private sector initiative (PSI), which is the primary mission of the current government: “[Lucas] Papademos' government has a specific task to perform and that it has already started performing it and we have to stand by it,” he said.
